Abstract
Language does not just borrow words from other languages but draws its
sustenance from stitching up a warm rapport at all levels with the languages being used in the region. Vocabulary, verbal phrases, verb patterns, syntax, idioms, metaphors, literary allusions, cultural practices, convictions and semantic all become part of mutual cultural exchange. No language exists in isolation and Urdu that came into existence with the juxtaposition of different cultural practices and linguistic traditions is a perfect example of syncretic ethos. The words and sounds of different languages resonate in other languages with equal intensity. Urdu is nurtured amidst Asian languages and this article seek to highlight its close and colorful affinity with the languages spoken with many specific examples.
